From Emile Woof, 25 January 2017:

Invitation to Chamber Concert 4th March

Anita and I now invite you to hear the Hampden String Quartet (with Libby Burgess) on Saturday evening 4th March at the usual time of 7 pm. BOOKING IS NOW OPEN!

We are advertising this concert a little earlier than usual because we are spending the month of February in the land of our birth, South Africa. We shall have our iPads with us and should be able to correspond as normal – but as this programme is likely to be a sell-out, we want to be sure of dealing with bookings as efficiently as usual!

Unusually, we are presenting a programme with only two works, separated by a short interval. But they are seriously substantial works, and I’m sure that this opportunity to hear them in a true chamber music setting will prove irresistible to both our regular guests and recent invitees.

Our performers on this occasion will be the Hampden String Quartet (Alexandra Caldon, Charlotte Reid, Helen Sanders Hewett and Elisheba Stevens); and in the second work, they will be joined by Libby Burgess, whose glowing piano awards read like musical Oscars!

The Hampdens and Libby are already well known to many of you as regular performers for Maxability. Following a public concert by the Hampden Quartet in March 2009, an article in the Financial Times stated: ‘I don’t think anyone was unmoved by the ardour and commitment with which this group delivered the soul-harrowing slow movement of Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden” quartet and the exuberant finale of Beethoven’s opus 130’. And, by coincidence, we shall be hearing that Schubert Quartet at this concert!

Here’s the Programme:

  1. Quartet No. 14 in D Minor, D810 (‘Death and the Maiden’) — Franz Schubert
    — INTERVAL —
  2. Piano Quintet in F Minor Op. 34 — Johannes Brahms

Anita and I look forward to seeing you on March 4th (from 6.30 pm, when you may wish to reserve your seat(s) on arrival and enjoy a glass of wine). The concert will begin at 7 pm.

As usual, the standard donation is £30 per place, including an excellent supper and wine (£25 for concert only).
